Every Pinterest field has two numbers: the hard maximum, and the point where the interface stops showing your text. Almost everyone writes to the first and gets judged on the second.

A 95-character title is within the limit and still fails, because the 55 characters carrying your keyword and your promise are never displayed. Treat the truncation column as the real target and the maximum as headroom.

Why these numbers move

The maximums are stable. The visible portions are not — they shift with screen width, language, font rendering and whichever layout Pinterest is testing. Treat ~40 and ~50 as planning figures rather than precise boundaries.

The robust strategy does not depend on the exact number: put the important words first. Then it does not matter where the cut lands.

Counting characters, not words

Pinterest counts characters, and that includes spaces, punctuation and emoji. Emoji are worth watching — many count as two characters, and some composed ones (skin tones, flags, families) count for considerably more. A row of six emoji can quietly consume a tenth of a 160-character bio.

Limits shift occasionally, and the visible portion varies with screen width and placement. Treat the visible numbers as planning figures rather than guarantees — writing to be safely inside them costs nothing.

Why the truncation point matters more than the limit

The instinct is to write up to the cap. That is the wrong target. A 98-character title is not "using the field fully" if the searchable phrase sits at character 70, because nobody scrolling ever sees it.

Work in two passes. First write the opening — the keyword and the hook — inside the visible window. Then add the rest, knowing it is a bonus that some viewers get and Pinterest reads. That ordering produces titles that work at both scales. The title generator builds them this way by default.

What counts as a character

Spaces count. So do commas, dashes and full stops.
Emoji usually count as more than one. Many are multi-byte, and some — flags, skin-tone variants, family groups — are sequences of several code points. One emoji can consume the space of several letters.
Line breaks count and are frequently stripped or collapsed depending on the field.
Decorative Unicode letters count as full characters while conveying less. Avoid them anyway — see the font generator for why they break screen readers.

Writing to a limit without sounding clipped

Hitting a cap by deleting words tends to produce something that reads like a telegram. Better tactics:

Cut the opening throat-clearing. "Here are some of our favourite" is 32 characters of nothing.
Delete intensifiers. "Really", "very", "absolutely", "stunning" — none of them are searched and all of them cost space.
Use a number instead of a quantity word. "12" beats "a dozen of the best".
Drop your brand name from the front. It is the most expensive word in a title nobody is searching yet.
Use an em dash instead of a clause. "Balcony Garden Ideas — 12 Layouts" says more in fewer characters than the same thought as a sentence.
