Why compress a pin at all

Pinterest re-encodes what you upload, so compression will not change how the pin looks in the feed. The benefit is everywhere else: faster uploads, less storage, and — if you use the same image on your blog — a materially faster page.

That last one matters most. The image on your destination page is usually the heaviest thing on it, and page speed affects both how Google ranks the page and how many Pinterest visitors stay long enough to read it. A pin that sends traffic to a slow page wastes the traffic.

Picking a quality level

Start at 75% and look at the preview. If the image is mostly photographic you can usually go lower; if it carries fine text or hard-edged graphics, stay higher — JPEG handles sharp edges worst.

A note on formats

Output is JPEG, which is the right default for photographic pins and universally supported. If your image is a graphic with flat colour and crisp text, PNG or WebP may preserve it better at a similar size — in that case compress it with a format-aware tool rather than this one.

Why compress a pin at all

Pinterest re-encodes what you upload, so compression is not about the file Pinterest serves. It is about three other things:

  • Upload speed, especially when publishing a batch on a phone connection.
  • The same image on your own site, where file weight directly affects load time — and where a slow page undoes the click your pin just earned.
  • Storage and transfer if you are handing assets to a client or a scheduler.

The second is the one that matters most. Pinterest measures what happens after the click, and a destination page that takes six seconds to render on mobile loses the visitor before your content appears.

Choosing a quality setting

JPEG quality is not linear. The jump from 100% to about 85% removes a large amount of file weight and almost no visible detail; below about 70% artefacts start showing on gradients and edges.

  • Photographs: 80–85% is the sweet spot. At pin display sizes it is indistinguishable from full quality.
  • Images with text overlay: stay higher, around 90%, or use PNG. JPEG compression attacks hard edges, and type is all hard edges.
  • Flat graphics and illustrations: PNG. It compresses large areas of solid colour losslessly and usually produces a smaller file than JPEG for that kind of image.

Format, briefly

  • JPEG — photographs. Small files, lossy, poor with sharp edges and text.
  • PNG — graphics, text, anything needing transparency. Lossless, larger for photos.
  • WebP — smaller than both at similar quality and excellent on your own website. Support for uploading it varies by platform, so keep a JPEG or PNG for the pin itself.

Compression that hurts

Every lossy save is a generation loss, and they stack. An image exported at 70%, edited, and exported at 70% again is not at 70% — it is visibly worse than either step suggests.

So compress once, at the end. Keep your working file at full quality, do all your edits there, and export the compressed version last. If you need to revise, go back to the original rather than re-editing the compressed copy.

What compression cannot fix

A soft image compresses badly and stays soft. Compression removes information; it never adds sharpness. If a pin looks blurry, the problem is upstream — an upscaled source, a screenshot, or a low-resolution original. Fix it at the source with a larger file, or crop tighter rather than scaling up.
